Position Title: General Supervisor – High Complexity Clinical Laboratory
Reports To: Laboratory Director / Technical Supervisor
Job Type: Per Diem (approximately 1–2 days per month)

Position Overview
The General Supervisor is responsible for overseeing daily operations of high-complexity clinical testing within a laboratory environment. This role ensures compliance with applicable regulatory standards, including CLIA, CAP, and state regulations. The General Supervisor provides guidance, training, and oversight to testing personnel and supports the development and maintenance of quality assurance programs.
Key Responsibilities

Act as operating personnel during initial phases of laboratory operations

Perform and supervise daily laboratory activities related to high-complexity testing

Ensure accuracy, quality, and timeliness of laboratory test results

Review and approve quality control data and implement corrective actions as needed

Monitor compliance with standard operating procedures, quality assurance programs, and regulatory requirements

Assist with training, supervision, and competency assessment of laboratory personnel

Maintain laboratory documentation, including quality control records, proficiency testing, personnel competency, and corrective actions

Participate in regulatory inspections and audits

Recommend and implement improvements to laboratory processes, procedures, and equipment

Communicate regularly with laboratory leadership regarding performance, staffing, and operational needs
Qualifications
-
Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory science, biological sciences, or a related field

Minimum of three (3) years of experience performing high-complexity laboratory testing
-
At least one (1) year of supervisory experience in a CLIA-certified laboratory

Experience with flow cytometry

Demonstrated leadership and ability to effectively supervise laboratory staff

Strong knowledge of high-complexity testing, quality systems, and regulatory compliance

Certification by a nationally recognized credentialing agency (e.g., ASCP) preferred
Regulatory Requirements

Must meet CLIA qualifications for a General Supervisor in a high-complexity testing laboratory (42 CFR §493.1461)

Must meet applicable state requirements for supervisory experience in high-complexity testing
Physical and Environmental Requirements

Ability to safely handle biological specimens and potentially hazardous materials

Ability to stand, sit, operate laboratory equipment, and perform precise manual tasks

Compliance with laboratory safety standards and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
