Job Title: Instrumentation & Controls Engineer
Work Location: Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas
Summary:
This position is responsible for overseeing and supporting instrumentation, process controls, and management information systems (MIS) within a manufacturing environment. The role involves installation, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of PLC hardware/software, control devices, and monitoring equipment, as well as project management for process improvement initiatives.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee troubleshooting, repair, and programming of control systems, including PLCs and HMIs, to ensure optimal plant operations.
- Develop and document ladder logic, graphical interfaces, and process/safety interlocks for control programming.
- Lead and support installation, maintenance, and calibration of process devices such as variable speed drives, encoders, probes, power supplies, and control valves.
- Design and implement projects involving information systems, including site security, information networks, and computer systems.
- Create wiring diagrams, layout drawings, and engineering specifications, and coordinate with internal and external engineering resources.
- Train and support staff on instrumentation and controls initiatives, ensuring proper implementation and adherence to best practices.
- Develop and update standard operating procedures and work instructions related to process control systems and HMI interfaces.
- Maintain compliance with quality, environmental, health, and safety policies, and promptly report any incidents or issues as required.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Instrumentation, or Electrical Engineering.
- 5-10 years of experience in instrumentation, process controls, and HMI systems.
- Field work training or experience related to instrumentation, controls, and electrical systems preferred.
- Ability to respond to call-outs and flexibility to work extended hours, including weekends and holidays, as needed.
- Proficiency in reading electrical schematics, P&IDs, ladder diagrams, and technical manuals, with strong documentation skills.
- Competence or willingness to learn information systems such as site security, computer networks, and phone networks.
- Understanding of various PLC control and HMI systems; ability to develop or learn PLC code and graphical interfaces for SCADA systems. Knowledge of Allen Bradley PLC hardware, Iconix, and Emerson flow meters/sensors is a plus.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and strong communication, problem-solving, planning, and organizational skills.
- Physically able to operate electronic office equipment, occasionally lift up to 25 pounds, and work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to dust, fumes, heat, humidity, and machinery noise.
- Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, and wear personal protective equipment as required.
